Joe Calhoun

Ernest Withers Gallery and Museum

Some people say that after working somewhere for a period of time that they fel as if they are a part of the place. But for 2025 Q2 Pick Award winner, Joe Calhoun, he is really a part of the museum. Joe’s life is actually interwoven in the iliad of civil rights right here in Memphis. Now, as a member of the hospitality and tourism industry, Joe uses the opportunity to tell his story.

How long have you been in the hospitality industry?

I have worked for the Wither’s Collection since 2020. I started as a volunteer before retiring from my other job and working here full time.

How did you get started in the hospitality industry?

After my kids moved to California I started volunteering with organizations across the city: Crosstown Concourse, Hattiloo Theatre, and other places. COVID, of course, closed many locations including the Ernest Withers Museum. Once they reopened, the manager at the time did not return because of health concerns in their family. So, I got offered the opportunity to start working here fulltime. It is actually great to be here. I am actually in some of the photos in Mr. Wither’s collection. I protested during the 1968 Sanitation Strike and I was later a member of the Memphis Invaders. So I get to tell my story working here.

What is your favorite part about working in the hospitality industry?

Sharing my story with people because it personalizes the events for our guests, especially for young people who are disconnected from their history. When I share my story it makes it real to them. It makes the history feel more current. You can have an impact on whatever you see happening. You don’t have to wait to get active.

Can you describe a time you created a memorable experience for a guest?

A couple from Germany found an article about the museum and I was in that article. They decided that when they came to Memphis they would bring the article to me. They not only brought it. But they had it laminated and framed. It was very special and it is on display here in the gallery.

What is some advice you would give to someone starting out in the hospitality industry?

Have a passion for it. You have an opportunity to direct people to what they see and do while they are here. They can feel the passion you have for what you do. Be knowledgable… But don’t forget to share what you love about your city.

Joe, thank you for being living history for every Memphian and visitor to our great city. As a hospitality and tourism professional your experience and passion bring Authentic Memphis Hospitality to life. Thank you for all that you do.
