Our mission is to create a lasting positive impression of the Memphis area by increasing the skills, knowledge and recognition of people who interact with visitors.

Our vision is a tourism and hospitality workforce is a skilled and knowledgeable population of friendly, down-to-earth people who know their city like true "insiders" and generously share their love of Memphis while providing excellent, unforgettable customer service.

Because of these hard-working professionals, the Memphis area is a place where visitors feel welcomed by everyone they meet, where visitors learn more than they expected to learn about our destination and all that it has to offer, where visitors enjoy themselves - and make plans to come back soon.

We support tourism and hospitality professionals across the spectrum of our industry. Working directly with employers, supervisors and guest contact staff, we deliver professional development training, certification, recognition, and resources.

  • We promote a new standard of customer service, raising expectations of hospitality and tourism professionals as we support them in their interactions with visitors across the Memphis area.

  • We provide professional development training and certifications for people who interact with visitors - aka "first impression" professionals. Our classes increase participants’ customer service skills and destination knowledge

  • We recognize professional excellence by honoring guest-contact employees who’ve gone above and beyond at our Pick Awards events.  We also give weekly shout-outs on social media to recognize great service. To participate, use the hashtag #901smile.

Welcome to Memphis is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit subsidiary of the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau. It was previously known as the Memphis Tourism Education Foundation.

Founded in 2002, the Memphis Tourism Education Foundation (MTEF) focused its efforts primarily on educational efforts related to workforce development and destination knowledge. Its historical initiatives and programs include the award-winning documentary I Am A Man, which followed the story of a sanitation worker who participated in the 1968 strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Memphis.

In early 2015, an industry-wide strategic planning process called Tourism 20/20 encouraged the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau to renew its nonprofit subsidiary’s commitment to more traditional workforce and economic development efforts. In July 2015, MTEF recruited a new board of directors, changed its name to “Welcome to Memphis” and adopted a new mission and vision for the organization. In March 2016, its new strategic plan was adopted, which led to its current training and recognition programs.

The Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau is a 501(c)(6) membership organization that works to bring visitors to Memphis. Its 501(c)(3) affiliate, Welcome to Memphis, works to make sure the tourism and hospitality professionals who greet those visitors are equipped with customer service skills and destination knowledge to create a lasting positive impression.

Make an in-kind donation of goods: We are seeking in-kind support for our events and year-round programming, specifically: catering, beverages, and event rentals.

Make an in-kind donation of services: We are able to cut our costs by accepting pro bono professional services. Let us know what area of expertise you can share with us.

Serve on our Advisory Board: We rely on input, advice, and guidance from the audiences we’re serving to ensure the development of effective programs. If you can attend regular meetings with your colleagues (no more than 6-8 per year), let us know! This committee also oversees Pick Award nominations and selection.

Become a professional Mentor: We are always looking for real-life success stories and experienced individuals who can impart their wisdom to our training participants.
